Many travelers arrive in China and discover that Google Maps, Gmail, WhatsApp and Instagram simply do not load. Here is why that happens, and how a travel eSIM changes it.
What is blocked in China
On local Chinese networks and Wi-Fi, a large number of foreign services are unavailable, including Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X and many news sites. Chinese apps such as WeChat, Alipay, Baidu and DiDi work normally.
Why a roaming eSIM is different
When you use a travel eSIM, you connect to a Chinese network as a visitor — just as you would when roaming with your home SIM. Your data is then carried to an internet exit point outside the mainland. For China eSIM plans that exit is Hong Kong or Singapore, shown as the IP location on each plan page. Because your traffic reaches the internet there, the services above are normally reachable without installing a VPN app.
What still will not work
- Hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi: these are local Chinese connections, so blocked services stay blocked. Switch Wi-Fi off when you need Google or WhatsApp.
- Location-sensitive apps: some apps may treat you as being in Hong Kong or Singapore because of your IP address, for example by showing their international version.
- Google Maps accuracy: Google Maps loads, but its map data in China is often out of date. Use Amap (Gaode) or Apple Maps for directions.
Practical tips
- Keep your eSIM as the mobile-data line and switch off Wi-Fi when using blocked services.
- Use WeChat for messaging with locals — almost everyone in China uses it.
- Download offline maps and translation languages before you go, as a backup.
Choose your plan from our China eSIM plans; each plan lists its network and IP location.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install a VPN app?
Usually not. China eSIM plans route your data through Hong Kong or Singapore, so Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are normally reachable on the eSIM without a VPN app.
Why does Google not work on my hotel Wi-Fi?
Hotel Wi-Fi is a local Chinese connection, so blocked services stay blocked. Turn Wi-Fi off and use your eSIM data instead.
Is Google Maps reliable in China?
It loads on the eSIM, but its map data in China is often out of date. Amap (Gaode) and Apple Maps are more accurate for directions.
